Fourth Blog - It's About Educating
Your blog posts should be about the sharing of knowledge with others... that is what defines the purpose for/of EDUCATION. It is a service provided, and (many) institutions of higher learning have lost sight of this primary rationale for their existence. Some will posit that their existence is based on the need for research - and they are the most qualified for such a pursuit. This is what I feel has made for a definite trend of increased egocentric tendencies, particularly amongst the younger members in our digital society. Generation Z is very egocentric - to the point they think the world revolves around them. They come first. What? There are others? They can wait. But I must be served now. You may be disappointed when you figure out I am the Soup Nazi. You'll find the link to that later, for those dedicated enough to read on (the deserving few). To that end, muy pronto, por favor. [for my Korean students - Spanish translation: really fast, please.]
Perhaps Arnold Schwarznegger's character in The Terminator was a harbinger [good college-level word] of what is to come. He kind of let us all know (this...what's to come) when he uttered that famous line to the police officer (and us, the movie audience) "I'll be back"(Austrian accent, you can hear it now...LOL) Towards the goal of educating - COMM 1130 students - there will be a 20-percent deduction from subsequent blogs that do not comply with the following:
#1 Language must be set at English, for everything - including the commenting;
#2 you must provide at least two interactive links - interactivity and ease of navigation are central (key) to the success of today's social media outlets;
#3 be aware I can count, and I can read. I also know how to spell, and can identify good (or bad) grammar. These misgivings will (further) lead to deductions; a combination of these three will receive an even lower score (less than 24 - which would be 20 percent off, with everything else (enough content, informative/educational, etc...) in compliance.
ALL COMMUNICATION STUDENTS
Dr. Hedrick expects you to provide evidence that some research has been done, and that you have GONE OVER THE READINGS/RESOURCES thoroughly. Please don't ask me whether you really need to read something/do something - if the instructions for the assignment already indicate otherwise. And any critique is incomplete if it doesn't cover everything that was supposed to included (critiqued)...an incomplete effort, incomplete analysis. This makes me The Soup Nazi of COMM 1130 Media Writing. I embrace this role, accept this distinction/honor as an award for being a stickler for detail. Editors and good writers share this devotion. There is a reference to eating white soup as a tradition for Lunar New Year, that (in part) inspired this attention (to soup... get it).
Words of wisdom: Improving your writing skills will be a life-long adventure... embrace that notion. Expand your vocabulary, learn to edit and practice makes perfect. Having another set of eyes look at something is always a good thing. The good editor (or peer/friend) will tell you, "no publication for you!" (at least not until you make the corrections - why we have a copy-editing exercise in this course).
Also, here's my Lunar New Year resolution.
